Production

This is the core of the APA, commercials production companies. All our services are to the benefit of commercials production company members.

Animation

Animation Group members are full members of the APA and receive the information and services of APA members but, in addition, the Animation Group meets and addresses issues specific to animation in commercials.

They include copyright issues- animation companies retain rights in the material they produce under the standard production contract.

Although they grant rights in the commercial- the agency can show the commercial or a clip from it in any media, as they can a live action commercial, they retain the rights in animation they have produced (subject to the conditions set out in that contract) and thus any other use of the animation eg in press ads, point of sale or merchandising is subject to the agency and production company agreeing a fee for such use.

UK commercials animation is of a very high quality and enjoys international renown. It is very broadly based, encompassing stop frame, cgi, model and plasticine.

The APA promotes the expertise of its animation company members, an example of which was the London – Tokyo Creative Forum 2004, in which a selection of commercials from APA animation group members was shown to Japanese advertising agencies.

VFX

The APA VFX Group represents the interests of its members – vfx companies working in commercials.

Like the other specialist groups in the APA, its members benefit from all membership services. Through that, VFX group members also benefit from being informed as to what is happening in commercials production generally. The VFX Group, in addition, addressed issues relating to VFX:

  1. It has integrated education as to what VFX companies do into the APA’s masterclass.
  2. It promotes the expertise of its members, through, for example, presentations in the London Design Festival and within the APA Show (and book and dvd of it), as well as overseas.
  3. It addresses issues such as digital playout, quality control and sound levels.
  4. It discusses issues raised by the vfx companies with advertising agencies, through the APA.
  5. It provides networking opportunities- for vfx companies and their customers and potential customers.
  6. It is working on standard terms and conditions for vfx in commercials.

Editors

The APA Editors Group is made up of editing companies working in commercials.

Like the other specialist groups in the APA, it’s members benefit from all membership services. Editor’s Group members also benefit from being informed as to what is happening in commercials production generally. The Editor’s Group, in addition, address issues relating to editing in commercials:

  5. It provides networking opportunities and greater integration into commercials production as a whole.

Sound Design

The APA Sound Design Group launched on 1st February 2005. Membership of the group is open to companies who produce sound for commercials. You are invited to be a founder member of the group and enjoy the benefits that we have outlined in our meetings and correspondence.

To summarise those:

  1. Integration into/ networking with the commercials production sector – with the APA members- commercials production companies, post and editing companies and with advertising agencies.
  2.  To be kept informed and up to date with what is happening in commercials production through our emails, website and meetings.
  3. To participate in the promotion of sound design companies, through the communication of a better understanding of what sound design companies do. That process has already started with the inclusion of a presentation on sound design for commercials in the APA Masterclass. The APA Sound Design Group will work on other methods of educating production companies and agencies about how sound design companies work and the value of their services.
  4. The opportunity for your staff to participate in training, through attending the Masterclass, which runs every year. This gives your staff the opportunity to gain a greater understanding of all aspects of commercials production and network with the agency and production company staff on the course.
  5. Promotion of APA Sound Design Group members in the UK and overseas through the APA Show and the book and dvd of it, which is sent out around the world, which will, this year for the first time, include credits of APA Sound Design Group members.
  6. To provide a forum for issues and opportunities for sound design companies in commercials and in the other areas of production the APA is educating its members about, such as viral advertising and in-store TV.

The group will identify further aims of sound design companies and the APA will work with its members to achieve those aims.

Interactive

The APA Interactive Group was formed in December 2012 to ensure that Interactive production companies are represented and their interests furthered. Production companies creating projects with a large software element are eligible for membership.

The key project for the APAi at the moment is the development of standard processes and contracts, in conjunction with the IPA and agencies with an interactive focus.
