On Thursday 29th May, we hosted a talent networking night for directors and producers as part of our Recruiting Underrepresented Talent event series. The evening began with a panel featuring APA members who shared valuable insider knowledge and insights.

The panel was chaired by the knowledgeable and engaging Jemel Richards from Hero Films, who led a dynamic discussion with our panellists

Topics included:

  • advice on real career progression
  • the importance of social media presence & showreels
  • platforms, grants & resources available to talent (including Unsolicited Scripts)
  • how to approach production companies
  • standout qualities production companies look for in new producers & directors
  • creating content outside of TV commercials, entering short film competitions & promoting yourself
  • how to gain commercial credits
  • differences between animation, post-production, and traditional production pipelines
  • insights into working with different types of clients & managing PPMs
  • moving away from spec commercials
  • anticipated changes in the industry & how talent can prepare
  • common mistakes to avoid & how to handle rejection – as Consultant Antoinette de Lisser jokingly reminded talent, a “no” simply stands for your “Next Opportunity!” – wise and encouraging words!

Our panellists shared their first roles in the industry and more about their career journeys, discussed potential routes for progression, and offered advice on getting ahead. They emphasised the importance of making connections and encouraged talent to be aware of the skills they will develop organically in their roles, as well as those they should already be demonstrating.

After the talk and Q&A, the rest of the evening was left for APA members and talent to chat and make some new and worthwhile connections. This networking night was a great way for everyone involved to expand their network and meet like-minded creatives.

We’ve received some wonderful positive feedback from attendees so far, and we’d love to hear from you too, so if you have any questions or comments, please contact [email protected].

We want to extend our gratitude to all the attendees, including APA members, who made this event a success. Your support and enthusiasm are instrumental in creating positive change in our industry.
