Jan 21, 2010 - 06:49 PM

Music for advertising- insights shared

How to commission music for advertising, best practice and avoiding the legal pitfalls was an event organised by the APA in conjunction with PCAM and the IPA.

Aimed at giving producers from production companies and agencies the benefit of the experience of music producers, composers and musicologists, the event covered the issues of best practice, contracts, briefing music companies, music search, soundalikes and rerecords and concluded with a look at the interaction between music and sound design.

First up was Jonathan Goldstein, the Chairman of PCAM, who gave us an overview on best practice and the rights that a producer needs to obtain when commissioning music. He also demonstrated the use of the PCAM website as a resource for obtaining information relating to commissioning music for advertising.

John Murrell, MD at Finger Music and Paul Reynolds, Head of Production at Adelphoi Music demonstrated the importance of briefing a Music Company in the right way while also giving us a breakdown of some of the do’s and don’ts involved in commissioning music.

Jonathan Tester took us through some of the benefits of using music search facilities and their role in hunting down existing tacks while Guy Protheroe spoke about the importance and role of a Forensic Musicologist in all areas of the music business in matters of copyright, plagiarism, and piracy.

Colin Smith and Simon Elms, Joint MDs of Eclectic Music gave us some pointers on best practice for rerecords, while also giving us and idea of what to expect for you budget. This was followed by a presentation by Chris Smith, Director of MCPS and PCAM on budgets and rates and some of the wider issues facing the industry.

Finally, Gary Walker of 750mph took us through the evolution of sound design and the difference between music and sound design and the role each plays in musical composition.

Currency risk management for production companies

Feb 02, 2010 - 04:13 PM

With budgets tight, more work originating overseas, in addition to production overseas, and the increased volatility in currency markets we have seen over the last 18 months, making the best foreign exchange arrangements is important to to the financial viability of a production.

We are pleased to announce that we have teamed up with one of the leading foreign exchange brokers in the UK, World First to help you plan how best to protect your productions from currency fluctuations. World First are focused on production companies, so they understand your business and can offer helpful advice up front e.g on the rate to use in your budget and then, if/when the production is confirmed, they can structure your funds to make sure you are protected against currency market movements.

The service can also save you money by providing better exchange rates than those offered by the banks (which can cost as much as 3-5% more).  The banks may also charge transaction fees and receiving charges. World First will endeavour to provide you with the best possible exchange rates.

World First are already working with a number of APA members.

IPA Bellwether report: the outlook improves

Jan 20, 2010 - 10:56 AM

The IPA has published its first Bellwether report of 2010.

They ask 300 marketing directors about their marketing budgets for the next quarter.

The report shows that in Q4 2009, marketing budgets were revised downward for the ninth quarter in succession but the downward revision was much shallower than previously. That was reflected in the increased confidence in their businesses financial prospects of those surveyed.

The report also indicated that marketing budgets for 2010 have been set higher than actual spend in 2009.

Of the fall in marketing budgets in Q4 2009, main media, which includes TV was the worst effected category i.e. It showed the steepest decline, while internet budgets were revised upwards.

To see the full picture, go to http://www.ipa.co.uk to purchase the Bellwether report.
